Islamabad: Arshad Nadeem, the Olympic gold medalist who set a new world record in javelin throw at the Paris Olympics 2024, was greeted with jubilation upon his return to Pakistan. A grand welcome awaited him at Allama Iqbal International Airport in Lahore, complete with a traditional water cannon salute as his plane landed.
According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the celebration was attended by several high-profile dignitaries including Federal Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal, Minister of State for Information Technology Shaza Fatima, and other local and sports officials. They, along with Nadeem’s family and a large number of fans, gathered early in the morning to herald the national hero’s return.
Nadeem, arriving from Istanbul, expressed his gratitude to his country and family, particularly highlighting the support of his parents and the Pakistani government, which he credited for his success. Amid the festive atmosphere, fans showered him with petals, and drum beats filled the air, echoing chants of national pride.
In statements made at the airport, Minister Ahsan Iqbal lauded Nadeem’s achievement as a proud moment for Pakistan, pointing out the potential for greatness even under resource constraints. Minister Shaza Fatima reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting young athletes, inspired by Nadeem’s victory.
The celebrations continued as Nadeem toured Lahore in a double-decker bus before heading to his hometown of Mian Channu, leaving a trail of inspired young athletes and proud citizens in his wake.
