OIC Ambassador Commits to Kashmir Resolution Under UN Guidelines

New York: Ambassador Hameed Ajibaiye Opeloyeru, the Permanent Observer of the OIC Mission to the United Nations, has emphasized the Organization of Islamic Cooperation’s dedication to resolving the Kashmir issue in accordance with United Nations resolutions and international law.

According to Kashmir Media Service, during a commemorative event for the fifth anniversary of India’s unilateral actions in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, Opeloyeru outlined the OIC’s strategic plan to hasten the resolution of the Kashmir crisis, a situation that has historically jeopardized the peace, stability, and security of South Asia.

Opeloyeru affirmed the OIC’s solidarity with the Kashmiri people in their quest for self-determination, recognizing their efforts as both just and legitimate. He reiterated the historical involvement of the United Nations with the Kashmir issue, citing the long-standing UN Security Council Resolution 47 from April 21, 1948.

Highlighting the OIC’s role, Opeloyeru stressed that as a regional organization with 57 member states, it actively supports the Kashmiri pursuit of self-determination through all legal, political, and diplomatic channels. He urged UN member states to support the implementation of relevant Security Council resolutions for a peaceful settlement of the dispute.

The event also featured remarks from other prominent figures like Ambassador Munir Akram of Pakistan, Dr. Ghulam Nabi Fai, and Senator Lt. General (retired) Abdul Qayyum, who underscored the urgency of resolving the Kashmir dispute. They drew parallels between the conflicts in Kashmir and Palestine, emphasizing the importance of adhering to UN resolutions to achieve lasting peace.

The gathering marked a significant date—the fifth anniversary of India’s repeal of Article 370, which had accorded special status to Jammu and Kashmir, a move that was broadly criticized by the international community. The OIC has remained proactive in its efforts to address and resolve the tensions in Kashmir.
