New Book Celebrates World Heritage in Mexican Cities

Queretaro, A groundbreaking publication, “The Outstanding Universal Value of Mexican Cities on the World Heritage List,” was recently unveiled at the Old Train Station of Queretaro. This book, published by Letra Capital and an initiative of the Municipality of Queretaro, offers an in-depth look into the rich heritage of 13 Mexican cities, recognized globally for their Outstanding Universal Value.

According to United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, the book aims to bring closer to over 7.5 million residents the cultural and historical significance of their cities, which include Campeche, Mexico City (and Xochimilco), Guanajuato, Morelia, Oaxaca (with Monte Albán), Puebla, Queretaro, San Miguel de Allende, Tlacotalpan, Zacatecas, as well as San Juan del Río, San Luis Potosí, and Durango, part of the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro cultural itinerary.

Luis Bernardo Nava, Mayor of Queretaro and President of the National Association of Mexican Cities on the World Heritage List, initiated this project to highlight the distinct attributes of these cities and foster a deeper appreciation of their shared heritage with humanity. The publication is in line with UNESCO’s Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage (1972).

“We are not only committed to the Association but also to managing actions and resources for preserving our country’s cultural heritage, a legacy for future generations,” stated Luis Nava.

The book addresses the complexities of managing urban cultural heritage, tying it to sustainable development. Andres Morales, UNESCO Representative in Mexico, underscored the challenges and importance of this endeavor.

The launch event also featured Jaime Font Fransi, a specialist in Historical Centres; Antonio Loyola, a Specialist in Historical and Artistic Heritage; María Teresa García Besne and Alejandra Iturbe Rosas, municipal Secretaries of Culture and Tourism, respectively; and Jorge Ortega González, the Director General of the National Association of Mexican Cities on the World Heritage List.
