Islamabad: The National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC) has issued a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) alert for northern Pakistan, highlighting the risk posed by ongoing high temperatures, intensified monsoon activity, and a westerly weather pattern.
Persistent heat over recent weeks has accelerated the melting of snow and glaciers in the northern regions. The impact of monsoon rains and thunderstorms has increased pressure on glacial lakes, elevating the threat of sudden GLOF events. Vulnerable valleys such as Reshun, Brep, and Booni face heightened risks.
These potential outbursts could trigger flash floods that threaten lives, livestock, and agriculture. Infrastructure, including roads and bridges, may suffer damage, potentially disrupting access to remote areas.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) advises locals, tourists, and trekkers to avoid glaciers and riverbanks in the affected regions. Residents are urged to stay informed and follow evacuation instructions from local authorities when necessary.
The public is encouraged to report unusual water movements or glacier activity to disaster officials. NDMA is coordinating with provincial and district authorities to ensure timely responses. For updates, the “Pak NDMA Disaster Alert” app is available for download.
