Islamabad: The National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC) of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an alert for expected monsoon rains across Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan from August 26 to 29, 2024, with potential risks of landslides and flooding.
According to Press Information Department, heavy rainfall is forecasted in multiple divisions across Punjab including Gujranwala, Lahore, and Sahiwal and various districts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa such as Malakand and Hazara. The intense downpour could trigger landslides in hilly regions and lead to floods in low-lying areas, particularly in urban centers such as the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi, along with Attock, Murree, and the Galliyat region.
The NDMA has instructed relevant departments to alert emergency response teams and prepare resources to address potential emergencies promptly. Local nullahs and river tributaries are also expected to experience increased flows, heightening the risk of flash floods during this period.
The public is advised to stay vigilant, adhere to safety directives issued by local authorities, and utilize tools like the ‘Pak NDMA Disaster Alert’ mobile app to receive timely updates and monitor weather conditions closely.
