NDMA Warns of Flash Flooding Risk in Northern and Central Pakistan Due to Monsoon Rains

Islamabad: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an alert for potential medium-level flash flooding in parts of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Islamabad, and various districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab, following a forecast of significant monsoon rains from July 17 to July 21.

According to Press Information Department, the NDMA’s National Emergencies Operation Center reports that areas such as Swat, Mingora, Battagram, Mardan, Swabi, Haripur, Abbottabad, and major cities including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Chakwal, Jhelum, Gujranwala, and Sialkot are expected to receive rainfall exceeding 50mm, which could substantially increase water flow in local streams and nullahs, leading to flash flooding. The authority has cautioned that the anticipated rain may also trigger urban flooding and elevate water levels in local nullahs, with strong winds and lightning strikes posing additional risks.

The NDMA has directed all relevant departments to implement necessary precautions to minimize the impact of the expected flooding and adverse weather conditions. The public is strongly advised to remain indoors during severe weather, maintain a safe distance from electrical infrastructure, and utilize the newly launched Pak NDMA Disaster Alert application, available on both Google Play Store and iOS App Store, for timely weather updates and safety guidelines.
