Islamabad: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is ramping up its efforts to manage potential emergencies, working closely with provincial and district administrations to enhance preparedness, according to a statement by its Chairman, Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik.
In a video message, he expressed condolences to the families affected by the recent flooding in Swat. He highlighted the severe impact of global climate change on Pakistan, noting that the country is expected to experience above-average rainfall during the upcoming monsoon season.
Lieutenant General Malik warned that the intense heat in northern regions could lead to the rapid melting of glaciers, potentially resulting in flooding of rivers and streams. He advised residents to remain vigilant as water levels could rise quickly during the monsoon.
The NDMA, he said, provides timely forecasts and information to relevant agencies to prepare for possible emergencies. The Authority’s National Emergency Operations Center is equipped to issue alerts six to eight months in advance, allowing for effective response planning.
He emphasized the need for district and provincial administrations in risk-prone areas to implement timely safety measures. The Chairman asserted that natural disasters can be mitigated through collaborative efforts, preparation, and public awareness.
The public was urged to adhere to instructions and precautionary measures issued by relevant agencies and district administrations to ensure safety.
