NDMA Reports on Monsoon Challenges: Casualties, Infrastructure Damage, and Relief Efforts in Pakistan

Islamabad: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has released its 43rd daily situation report for the 2024 monsoon season, documenting the ongoing challenges and responses across Pakistan from August 11 to August 12. The report highlights casualties, significant infrastructure damage, and the concerted relief efforts underway to mitigate the impacts of the severe weather conditions.

According to National Disaster Management Authority, the last 24 hours have seen three fatalities due to monsoon-related incidents, including drownings and structural collapses, with several injuries reported across multiple regions. The infrastructure damage includes dozens of houses either partially or fully damaged, particularly in Gilgit Baltistan and Punjab, reflecting the harsh conditions faced by residents.

The NDMA’s report also details the cumulative impact of the season from July 1 to August 12, with 172 deaths and 310 injuries. Infrastructure damages are extensive, with over 1,949 houses affected and significant damages to roads and bridges. The monsoon has triggered widespread flooding, exacerbating the vulnerability of affected districts and necessitating robust emergency response measures.

Relief efforts over the past day have included the distribution of essential supplies such as mosquito nets, quilts, and kitchen sets, primarily in Sindh and Gilgit Baltistan. The cumulative efforts since July have seen thousands of people treated in medical camps, and numerous families provided shelter in relief camps.

The NDMA continues to coordinate with provincial disaster management authorities to enhance preparedness and response strategies, aiming to minimize the adverse effects of the monsoon season and support the affected populations effectively.
