NDMA Issues Monsoon 2024 Weather Advisory and Safety Guidelines for Pakistan

Islamabad: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has released its first update for the Monsoon 2024 season, detailing significant rainfall across various regions and forecasting heavy to very heavy falls in the coming days. This comprehensive update includes specific warnings for potential floods and urban flooding due to the expected heavy rains.

According to National Disaster Management Authority, Lahore recorded the highest rainfall in the last 24 hours with 105 mm, followed by significant downpours in other parts of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and the State of AJ and K. The NDMA has forecasted that rain-wind thundershowers with few heavy to very heavy falls are expected across extensive areas of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad Capital Territory, and AJ and K over the next 24-48 hours.

The NDMA has issued specific guidance for Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs) to ensure early warning systems are in place and to promote public awareness through all media channels. Urban areas such as Lahore, Sialkot, and Rawalpindi are advised to prepare for urban flooding, and hilly regions are warned of possible flash floods and landslides. The NDMA also highlighted the likelihood of moderate to high flood levels in the River Jhelum upstream of the Mangla Dam and the River Kabul at Nowshera between July 4th and 7th.

Further guidance includes ensuring the pre-placement of machinery for road restoration, readiness of rescue services, armed forces, and NGOs for rapid response. The public is advised to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during thunderstorms, refrain from crossing nullahs, and take measures to secure their homes from potential damage.
