NDMA Issues GLOF Advisory for GB and KP Regions Due to Severe Weather Risks

Islamabad: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an advisory warning of increased risks of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOF), flash floods, and landslides in the Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) regions, advising the public to exercise caution and adhere to safety guidelines.

According to Press Information Department, the advisory comes in response to higher temperatures and adverse weather conditions, including rain and wind-thunderstorms expected until August 12, 2024. The NDMA has pinpointed Districts Dir, Swat, Kohistan, Astore, Gilgit, Skardu, Ghanche, Shigar, and adjoining areas as particularly vulnerable. Residents are urged to limit unnecessary movement, especially near discharge nullahs, streams, and rivers, and to follow local authorities’ instructions for potential evacuations.

The NDMA has also enhanced its public safety measures by launching the Pak NDMA Disaster Alert application, available on both Google Play Store and iOS App Store, to provide timely alerts, advisories, and guidelines. Additionally, instructions have been issued to all relevant departments to take necessary precautions to mitigate the impacts of the anticipated extreme weather conditions.
