NDMA Activates Response as Severe Rainfall Threatens Punjab and Sindh

Islamabad: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has activated its National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC) in response to predictions of intense rainfall and potential flooding in Punjab and Sindh. This proactive measure follows forecasts of significant weather activity from the eastern Indian side, with the monsoon expected to heavily impact the upper catchments of major rivers including Sutlej, Ravi, and Chenab starting July 2, 2024.

According to Press Information Department, NDMA has issued early warnings across all provinces, particularly highlighting risks of lightning strikes and rapid rises in river water levels between July 5 and 7. The expected conditions pose risks of flash flooding and urban flooding in major metropolitan areas. NDMA has alerted that River Sutlej may see water levels reaching high flood conditions by July 10. The authority is closely coordinating with federal and provincial departments to enhance preparedness for these potential emergencies. Public advisories emphasize staying informed through the NDMA’s disaster alert app, adhering to local authorities’ evacuation orders if issued, and avoiding unnecessary travel during the severe weather period.
