Islamabad, April 13, 2023 (PPI-OT): The well-being of the industry of creative arts which includes musicians, artists, calligraphists, singers, performers, sculptors, script and screen writers and related businesses is a national asset that reflects the culture of the country. The protection of their IP Rights is directly related to their economic interests as well as providing incentives for the next generation involved in the creative arts industry.
IPO-Pakistan aims to improve the existing Copyright Laws. Amendments have accordingly been proposed in the existing Copyright Ordinance 1962 (Amended in 2000) to protect the rights of the creative arts community by strengthening the Performing Rights societies, ensuring just and transparent payments of royalties, compliance with WIPO treaties (such the Marrakesh Treaty for VIPs, internet treaties etc), introduction of minimum penalties, validation of e-documents and introduction of international best practices.
Accordingly, a Consultation process was held in major cities throughout the country. Consultative Sessions were held in Peshawar, Islamabad, Quetta, Karachi and Lahore during February and March 2023. Accompanied by Deputy Director Copyright Mr. Saifullah Khan, Chair IPO personally presided in these sessions which were attended by prominent members of the Creative Arts community, lawyers, academia, business chambers and public sector organizations and afforded a frank exchange of views and proposals.
IPO-Pakistan hopes (a) to continue these consultations and (b) that the Creative Arts community must engage more proactively in establishing the very legislation that is meant to protect their interests.
