National Assembly Speaker Stresses on Protecting Rights and Facilities for the Visually Impaired on International White Cane Day

Islamabad, 15 Oct 2023: In his message marking International White Cane Day, which is observed globally on October 15th under the aegis of the United Nations, Speaker National Assembly Raja Pervez Ashraf asserted that safeguarding the rights of the visually impaired and ensuring their accessibility to basic amenities stands as the Parliament’s foremost duty.

Raja Pervez Ashraf acknowledged the significant potential that visually impaired individuals possess. He emphasized that by granting them equal opportunities in education and employment, they can be integrated as valuable contributors to the nation’s progress.

Highlighting the symbolism behind the white cane, the Speaker remarked that it signifies the independence of visually impaired individuals, proving that their condition does not hinder their advancement. He noted their pivotal role across various sectors.

Raja Pervez Ashraf also pointed out the measures the National Assembly of Pakistan has undertaken, including the formulation of specific legislation aimed at addressing the concerns of such individuals. Among the notable initiatives, the Constitution of Pakistan has been made available in Braille on the Parliament’s website. Additionally, steps have been taken to enhance the website’s accessibility for the visually impaired.

Concluding his message, the Speaker called for renewed commitment towards supporting the visually impaired, urging society to forgo pity and instead, foster an environment that empowers them to become proactive participants in the nation’s development.
