Islamabad, August 04, 2021 (PPI-OT):The Speaker National Assembly Mr. Asad Qaiser vowed strong action against malpractices in purchase of tobacco from the farmers. He stated that no stone would be left unturned to ensure that the farmers produce is purchased at a decent price through a hassle-free mechanism. He urged the tobacco companies to facilitate the farmers and give them a decent profit for their toil. He instructed a select group of MNAs from the National Assembly Special Committee on Agricultural Products to inspect the purchase mechanism and present a report to the Committee.
A delegation of the farmers led by Muhammad Ayaz Khan from Swabi met the Speaker National Assembly at his residence and apprised him of the most pressing concerns of the farmers. The farmers’ delegation presented videos shot at the purchase centers showing inordinate delays and hassle for the farmers at the tobacco purchase centers. It was highlighted that in such scorching heat, the farmers along with their loaded vehicles wait in front of purchase centers to sell tobacco. The farmers stated that lack of purchase by the smaller companies at this stage or hassles at purchase centers of the bigger companies humiliate and frustrate the farmers who are desperate to sell their produce for a decent profit.
The Speaker NA convened a meeting with all the stakeholders to ensure that the farmers are not exploited. The Speaker assured the farmers that the National Assembly Special Committee on Agricultural Products is thoroughly examining the legislative and regulatory framework for tobacco sector and necessary reform initiatives would be undertaken to protect the interest of the farmers.
