National Assembly Committee Reviews Road Safety and Postal Service Developments


Islamabad: The National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Communications convened to review the status and progress of key departments, including the National Highways and Motorways Police (NHMP) and Pakistan Post, among others. The meeting, held under the Chairmanship of Aijaz Hussain Jakhrani, MNA, addressed issues such as traffic safety, postal service modernization, and financial planning for Pakistan’s communication sectors.



According to National Assembly of Pakistan, NHMP presented its achievements in traffic regulation and safety measures across 4,736 km of national highways and motorways. With a workforce of 9,098 officers, the NHMP has enforced traffic laws resulting in PKR 15.4 billion in fines collected from January to November 2024. The Committee commended the NHMP for implementing modern initiatives like e-ticketing and cashless systems, which have improved road safety and efficiency.



Pakistan Post, represented by its Director General, reported a 30.35% increase in revenue for FY 2023-24 and detailed ongoing modernization efforts supported by Korea’s EXIM Bank. These efforts aim to enhance operational efficiency through ICT upgrades and automation. Despite its income of 9.2 billion rupees, Pakistan Post faces a significant expenditure of 28 billion rupees. The Secretary of Communications shared a growth-oriented business plan with the Committee, which requested a comparative analysis of postal services with other regional countries for the next meeting.



The meeting was attended by several parliamentary members and officials from the Communications Ministry, highlighting the importance of these sectors in the country’s infrastructure and development planning.
