National Assembly Committee Reviews Infrastructure Plans Amidst 2025 Flood Aftermath

Islamabad: The National Assembly Standing Committee on Economic Affairs Division convened in Islamabad, chaired by Dr. Mirza Ikhtiar Baig, to deliberate on critical infrastructure projects and assess the extensive damage caused by the 2025 floods across Pakistan.

The committee was informed about the Lyari Expressway Corridor, which spans approximately 16 kilometers from ICI Chowk to Sohrab Goth, compared to the newly constructed M-10 Motorway that shares the starting point at ICI Chowk and connects with the M-6 Motorway near Hyderabad. The inclusion of the Lyari Elevated Freight Corridor project in the Public Sector Development Program (PSDP) was discussed, noting its exclusion from the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode. Karachi Port Trust (KPT) and EXIM are conducting studies related to this project, with recommendations to propose its inclusion in the PSDP next year.

Attention shifted to the devastating impact of the 2025 monsoon floods. Representatives from the Ministry of Planning and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) provided a comprehensive briefing on the floods, which affected the nation from June 26 to September 19, 2025. The floods resulted in 1,006 fatalities and 1,063 injuries. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab were the hardest-hit regions, experiencing the highest number of casualties.

The floods also caused extensive damage to infrastructure and livelihoods, with 1,981 kilometers of roads, 239 bridges, and 12,569 homes either partially or completely damaged. Additionally, 6,509 livestock perished during the disaster.

In response to the humanitarian crisis, 949 relief camps were established, providing shelter to 152,252 individuals. Health services were offered to 662,098 people through 741 medical camps across all provinces, including Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

The meeting was attended by several Members of the National Assembly, including Mr. Ammar Ahmad Khan Leghari, Pir Syed Fazal Ali Shah Jillani, Mr. Muhammad Khan Daha, and others, along with the Secretary of the Economic Affairs Division and relevant officials.
