Islamabad: The National Assembly approved several amendment bills, including “The Supreme Court Number of Judges (Amendment) Bill, 2024,” aimed at strengthening the judiciary by increasing the number of judges. The House also passed amendments related to judicial practice, procedure, and defense forces.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Minister for Law Azam Nazeer Tarar introduced the legislation, which includes key provisions such as increasing the number of Supreme Court judges to address the backlog of cases. The Supreme Court Number of Judges Amendment Bill allows for an increase of up to 34 judges. Additionally, the Islamabad High Court (Amendment) Bill, 2024, raises the number of judges in the Islamabad High Court from nine to twelve.

Other legislation passed by the National Assembly includes “The Supreme Court Practice and Procedure (Amendment) Bill, 2024” and “The Islamabad High Court (Amendment) Bill, 2024.” These measures are part of a broader effort to enhance the efficiency and capacity of the judiciary.

In addition to the judicial amendments, the National Assembly passed defense-related bills, specifically “The Pakistan Army (Amendment) Bill, 2024,” “The Pakistan Air Force (Amendment) Bill, 2024,” and “The Pakistan Navy (Amendment) Bill, 2024.” These bills were presented by Minister for Defence Khawaja Muhammad Asif.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif attended the session, during which these significant legislative moves took place. The House will reconvene tomorrow at eleven a.m.
