ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly adopted a resolution today that approves the Proclamation of Emergency issued by the President on October 11 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The resolution was moved by Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Tariq Fazal Chaudhary and is considered a constitutional requirement according to Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar.
According to Radio Pakistan, the decision to impose an emergency was driven by internal disturbances in the province and the provincial government’s lack of focus on terrorism, as stated by Azam Nazeer Tarar. He reported that 3,787 terrorist incidents have occurred in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa over the past year, and emphasized that the emergency measure was taken as a last resort to protect lives and property. Tarar also pointed out that the Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had expressed concerns about the provincial government’s priorities to both the President and the Prime Minister.
Defence Minister Khawaja Asif echoed these sentiments, asserting the necessity of the emergency declaration due to increasing terrorism incidents. Other officials, including Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, supported the move, citing the provincial government’s failure to ensure counterterrorism measures and the urgent need for a collective approach to combat terrorism. The House is scheduled to reconvene on Friday at 11 a.m.
