NA Speaker Remembers Historic Election of Benazir Bhutto as Pakistan’s First Female Prime Minister

Islamabad, Speaker National Assembly Raja Pervez Ashraf commemorated the election of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto as Pakistan’s first female Prime Minister on November 16, 1988. He emphasized the importance of elections in sustaining democracy and democratic values in Pakistan.

According to National Assembly of Pakistan, Speaker Ashraf highlighted the crucial role of elections in providing citizens the opportunity to choose their representatives and the pivotal choice made by the Pakistani nation in 1988. He underscored the Pakistan Peoples’ Party’s (PPP) belief in the power granted by the people and its respect for the people’s choice. The Speaker paid tribute to Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto’s sacrifices for the continuity of the democratic process in Pakistan and stressed the importance of the supremacy of the constitution and the rule of law in fostering democratic norms. He also affirmed that free and fair elections are essential for effective governance in any society.
