Islamabad: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif met with Filippo Grandi, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), at the Prime Minister House to discuss the ongoing support and challenges related to hosting Afghan refugees in Pakistan. The meeting highlighted Pakistan’s long-term commitment and the need for international cooperation to manage the refugee situation effectively.
According to Press Information Department, during their meeting, Prime Minister Sharif expressed gratitude for UNHCR’s enduring partnership and support. He recounted Pakistan’s role in providing refuge to Afghan nationals over the past four decades, emphasizing the country’s efforts to uphold the dignity and respect of the refugees despite facing numerous challenges. The Prime Minister called on the international community to acknowledge Pakistan’s contributions and to share the responsibility more equitably. He urged UNHCR to assist in mobilizing resources that would support Pakistan’s initiatives and promote a durable solution for the refugees, including safe and dignified return to Afghanistan and possibilities for third-country relocation.
UN High Commissioner Grandi expressed his appreciation for Pakistan’s hospitality and assured continued collaboration with the Pakistani authorities to address the needs of Afghan refugees. The discussion reaffirmed both parties’ commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of vulnerable populations hosted in Pakistan.
