Hattian Bala, The Forest Department in the Muzaffarabad Division is grappling with significant challenges in managing its timber resources. Arshad Khan, the Director of Forests, reported that while there are approximately 38 lakh cubic feet of wood in government forests, restrictions and policies are impacting the delivery and distribution of this resource. The department’s current predicament highlights broader issues regarding forest conservation and resource management in the region.
According to Press Club, Arshad Khan stated that of the total wood available, 3 to 4 lakh cubic feet are ready to be delivered to the UT division. However, due to existing bans and regulatory measures, this process has become complicated. The department has allocated funds amounting to 5 crore 50 lakh rupees for wood drainage, but the implementation of any policy depends on government directives. The Ordinance has brought significant changes, categorizing the cutting of both green and dry types of trees as a major offense. As a result, deforestation has notably declined, and smuggling has been reduced by 95%.
Khan also mentioned that the government policy has led to the suspension of wood deliveries for dowry purposes from the forest department, which has caused public pressure on the department. The UT Division is receiving thousands of applications for wood, but the department is currently unable to fulfill these requests. To combat smuggling, the forest department’s staff at various checkpoints remains vigilant, and there is ongoing cooperation with the administration, police, and other departments. Khan emphasized that forest protection is a collective responsibility and noted that the department has also seized various types of smuggled herbs. Any unauthorized transport of forest products, including Gili and sleeper woods, is being strictly monitored and confiscated when necessary.
This situation reflects the complexities of balancing forest conservation efforts with the demands for timber and other forest products in the Muzaffarabad Division and underscores the need for effective policies and cooperative efforts in managing these natural resources.
