Ahmedabad, A Muslim street vendor, Mohammed Faizan, who was reportedly assaulted by police in late April, has died from his injuries after spending over a month in a hospital in Vadodara, Gujarat. The incident has sparked outcry and demands for accountability within the community.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Faizan, an omelette vendor near Vadodara railway station, was allegedly attacked by Indian police officers and a van driver after they found his shop open late at night. The altercation reportedly involved severe physical abuse, leading to significant health complications that ultimately resulted in his death.
The victim’s brother, Mumtaz, described the severe impact of the injuries on Faizan, stating that his backbone was broken and he suffered critical damage to his kidneys and lungs. Despite extensive medical efforts funded by philanthropists and partial support from the Muslim Doctors Association, Faizan succumbed to his injuries.
Mumtaz has called for the officers involved to be charged with murder under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code, citing the brutal nature of the attack. The local community and Faizan’s family are pressing for justice, emphasizing the need for action against the officers to prevent further such incidents.
Faizan, originally from Bihar, has been taken back to his native village for burial, leaving behind a widow just ten months into their marriage. His death follows another recent incident involving the death of a young Muslim man, highlighting ongoing tensions and grievances regarding police conduct in the region.
