Muslim Politician’s Arrest in Assam Sparks Free Speech Concerns

Guwahati: Indian police have detained eight individuals, including a Muslim Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA), in the BJP-governed state of Assam following statements labeling the recent Pahalgam attack as a conspiracy by the Modi administration.

The arrested legislator, Aminul Islam, is from the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF). His arrest, carried out by Assam police, came under the directive of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, as reported by Kashmir Media Service.

Islam’s comments linked both the 2019 Pulwama attack and the recent Pahalgam incident to orchestrated efforts by the Modi-led government. Assam, under Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leadership, has been criticized for what some see as a crackdown on political dissent, particularly from the Muslim community.

Chief Minister Sarma took to social media with a provocative message, asserting that Assam will not tolerate any support for Pakistan concerning the Pahalgam incident. His statement has heightened the political tension surrounding the arrests.

The detentions have drawn the attention of human rights activists who argue that such measures undermine freedom of speech and democratic rights in the region.
