Mumbai, June 30, 2022 (PPI-OT):As part of eradicating the signs of Muslim identity in India, the Hindutva-backed government in Maharashtra changed the Muslims names of two cities in the state. The name of Aurangabad has been changed to Sambhajinagar and that of Osmanabad to Dharashiv. Aurangabad was named after Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in the 17th century. Osmanabad was named after Hyderabad’s last ruler Mir Osman Ali Khan.
Renaming of these cities has long been demand of the extremist Hindu organization Shiv Sena. The new airport in Navi Mumbai has also been renamed after DB Patil, a leader of the people displaced to build the satellite town.
