Muslim man dies in police custody in Gujarat, family alleges torture, demands probe

New Delhi, September 17, 2021 (PPI-OT):The 32 year old Muslim youth, Qasim Abdullah Hayat, who was arrested on charges of transporting beef, was found dead inside the Godhra B Division police station lock-up in the Indian state of Gujarat. The family of Qasim has said that he was tortured at the lock-up before his death. They demanded a probe into his demise.

A relative of the deceased was d by The Indian Express as saying, “I met Qasim on September 14 at the police station. He told me that the police beat him up and were forcing him to confess that he was carrying beef. When I came with his tiffin and tea this morning around 7.30am, police did not let me in. They did not tell me that he had died. Someone from the police station told us that he was tortured the previous night.”

As per the FIR registered by the police, on September 14, the police patrol team received a tip-off that the accused was carrying cow meat, which is prohibited in Gujarat, on a two-wheeler from Sevaliya to Godhra, following which a team intercepted the two-wheeler at the Godhra Bhamaiyya Bridge.

The accused was booked under the Indian Penal Code Section 429 (mischief by killing or maiming cattle), the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 Section 11 (treating animals cruelly), and under the Gujarat Animal Preservation (Amendment) Act, 2017.
