Muslim Man Dies in Police Custody in Gujarat

Ahmedabad, A 30-year-old Muslim man named Azharuddin died under police custody in Gujarat, sparking allegations of severe police misconduct.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Azharuddin was allegedly beaten to death at the Vejalpur police station in Ahmedabad following a minor dispute with a local meat trader. His wife, Sana, reported that after the dispute, they went to the police station to lodge a complaint, but she is unclear about the events that transpired thereafter leading to his fatal beating.

Sana claimed that before his death, Azharuddin described being brutally assaulted by police officers, sustaining injuries to his head, back, and legs. The incident has highlighted ongoing issues in Gujarat, where there have been 173 custodial deaths in the past two years without any compensations awarded.

A demand for justice and accountability from the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) and calls for a thorough investigation into the policemen involved have been made. This case adds to Gujarat’s notorious record for the highest number of custodial deaths in India for the third consecutive year.
