Kolkata, A Muslim man, Rakib Sheikh, has reportedly died due to severe torture endured in police custody in the Murshidabad district of West Bengal, India.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Rakib Sheikh’s father, Zakir Sheikh, recounted that two police officers forcefully entered their home in the Panchgachia area last Friday and took his son without providing any reason. Zakir alleged that his son was subjected to severe torture while in custody. He stated that Rakib was arrested arbitrarily and later appeared in court, where he was remanded to jail.
Rakib’s condition worsened during his incarceration, leading to his hospitalization at Jangipur Hospital on Sunday. He was subsequently moved to Murshidabad Medical College, where he passed away at midnight on Tuesday. The family asserts that Rakib’s death was directly linked to the physical abuse he received in police custody.
Zakir Sheikh expressed his grief and anger over the loss of his son, stating, “The night he died, I was informed to visit the hospital, and when I went there, I saw my child was dead.” He firmly believes the police were responsible for Rakib’s death, a claim that he says was corroborated at Jangipur Hospital.
This incident raises serious concerns about police conduct and the safety of individuals in custody, particularly in the context of alleged custodial violence.
