Murad Shah Hosts Farewell for World Bank’s Najy Benhassine, Celebrates Successful Partnership


KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah hosted a farewell ceremony at the Chief Minister’s House to honor Najy Benhassine, the outgoing World Bank Country Director for Pakistan. The event marked the conclusion of Benhassine’s five-year tenure, highlighting the achievements and collaborations during his leadership.



The ceremony was attended by a diverse group of provincial ministers, advisors, special assistants, the Chief Secretary, foreign diplomats, and industrialists. Benhassine, dressed in traditional shalwar kameez and a black waistcoat, was commended for his leadership, particularly during the 2022 floods that devastated Sindh.



A documentary showcased ongoing projects from the World Bank-Sindh government partnership. Chief Minister Shah described the occasion as both joyous and memorable, emphasizing the progress made in collaboration with the World Bank, benefiting millions in Sindh.



Murad Shah praised Benhassine’s role during the 2022 floods, recognizing his timely strategies that provided critical support to affected communities. The Chief Minister also acknowledged guidance from Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, which ensured successful rehabilitation efforts.



Under Benhassine’s tenure, Sindh’s portfolio with the World Bank expanded to $3.96 billion, focusing on areas such as climate resilience and infrastructure restoration. Shah highlighted significant projects like the Sindh Flood Emergency Housing Reconstruction Project and several Karachi initiatives aimed at improving life in the city.



The Chief Minister noted the approval of the World Bank’s Country Partnership Framework 2026-2035, with an anticipated $20 billion in assistance for Pakistan. This framework aligns with Sindh’s priorities, targeting areas like education and environmental improvement.



In his farewell address, Benhassine praised Sindh’s commitment and the personal involvement of Chief Minister Shah. He acknowledged Shah’s efforts during the post-flood recovery and expressed optimism for the future of the partnership.



The ceremony underscored the ongoing collaboration between the World Bank and Sindh, celebrating past achievements and setting the stage for future progress under new leadership.
