Mumbai, In a controversial move, a mosque and a madrasa, both over three decades old, were demolished by the Maharashtra government in Mumbai, purportedly for a road widening project.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the demolition of the Gulshan Ahmed Raza Madrasa and Masjid Tahira, located on Ghat Kopar-Andheri street, was executed under strict police oversight. This marks the second such instance in Mumbai where religious structures have been targeted in early morning operations.
Previously, on December 28, a similar demolition occurred near Gandhi Maidan in Kurla (West), again under the pretext of removing illegal structures. Mansoor Sheikh, a trustee of the mosque and madrasa near Sarode Hospital, asserted that legal authorization was obtained from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) during the Ghat Kopar-Andheri Link Road widening. The demolition has led to significant unrest within the local Muslim community, raising questions about the action’s legality.
