Monsoon Wreaks Havoc in Pakistan, Displacing Thousands and Damaging Infrastructure

Pakistan: A comprehensive assessment reveals severe monsoon damage across Pakistan, with thousands displaced and critical infrastructure including schools, houses, and roads significantly affected. The National Disaster Management Authority’s latest update outlines extensive damages and ongoing relief efforts in multiple provinces.

According to National Disaster Management Authority, Sindh Province experienced considerable devastation, particularly in the Khairpur and Sukkur districts. A fact-finding mission involving multiple organizations, including UN agencies and Islamic Relief, confirmed the displacement of 33,178 individuals due to floods. In the Katcha areas, approximately 80% of crops were ruined, 25 schools submerged, and a police station was damaged.

Balochistan Province anticipates additional rainfall, which might surpass previous records, as per the Pakistan Meteorological Department. The floods have already destroyed or damaged hundreds of houses and crucial social infrastructure, including bridges and roads. The UNHCR reported significant damage to water supply systems in refugee villages, exacerbating the risk of waterborne diseases.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, the weather conditions have heightened the risk of glacier lake outburst floods (GLOF). The Provincial Disaster Management Authority documented 72 fatalities and significant damage to housing and livestock due to continuous heavy rains. The province also recorded its first case of Mpox, prompting immediate health advisory meetings.
