Islamabad: A significant monsoon system is expected to bring extensive rainfall across Pakistan from August 27 to 31, affecting all regions with potential risks of urban flooding and landslides.
According to National Weather Forecasting Centre – Islamabad, the current deep depression over north Gujarat, India, is moving towards Eastern Sindh and will merge with strong monsoon currents impacting the southern parts of Pakistan. Additionally, a westerly wave will affect the northern regions starting August 29. This complex weather pattern will lead to heavy to very heavy rainfall in areas including Sindh, Balochistan, Punjab, Islamabad, Kashmir, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan.
The expected downpour may lead to pluvial floods in low-lying areas, flash flooding in local streams and hill torrents, and possibly trigger a glacier lake outburst flood in susceptible regions of upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan. Urban centers like Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, and Peshawar may see significant flooding, affecting daily routines and causing damage to structures. Authorities are on alert, and residents in high-risk areas are advised to take precautionary measures to mitigate impacts.
