Monsoon Surge to Bring Torrential Rains Across Pakistan, Risking Floods and Landslides

Islamabad: A significant monsoon system is set to impact vast regions of Pakistan from August 16 to 20, 2024, bringing torrential rains, potential landslides, and flash flooding, as forecasted by the National Weather Forecasting Centre. The anticipated weather event will affect areas from Balochistan and Sindh to Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir.

According to National Weather Forecasting Centre – Islamabad, heavy rainfalls will occur in the southern parts of the country until August 18, with occasional breaks, and will continue in the upper regions through August 20. Cities like Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, and Karachi are expected to experience significant downpours that may lead to urban flooding. The hilly areas are particularly at risk for landslides and flash flooding, especially in places like Murree, Galliyat, and the northern districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The government has issued warnings for low-lying areas in Balochistan and Sindh due to the potential for inundation and pluvial flooding. Additionally, travelers and tourists in vulnerable hilly regions are advised to exercise extreme caution.
