Lahore: As monsoon rains continue and glaciers melt, river flows throughout Punjab are on the rise, prompting local authorities to issue flood warnings and prepare for potential emergencies. The Directorate General Public Relation for the Government of Punjab reported moderate floods at key points along the Indus River and normal flow levels at other major rivers, with ongoing rainfall expected to persist until August 6, 2024.
According to Directorate General Public Relation – Govt of Punjab, the Indus River at Chashma and Taunsa is experiencing moderate flooding, while lower levels of flooding have been reported at Tarbela and Kala Bagh. Other major rivers including the Ravi, Chenab, Jhelum, and Sutlej are currently at normal flow levels. However, the Chhachhar riverbeds are under a moderate flood status, and very high-level flood ridges are predicted in mountainous areas within the next 48 hours.
DG PDMA Irfan Ali Kathia has instructed administrations in vulnerable districts to remain on high alert and ensure that all necessary arrangements are in place to handle the flood risks. The water levels in Mangala Dam and Tarbela are being closely monitored, currently at 62% and 85% capacity respectively. Additionally, the water levels in Indian dams on the Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi rivers are up to 43%.
The PDMA Control Room and District Emergency Operation Centers are monitoring the situation around the clock. The public is advised to take precautionary measures during the rainy season, avoid unnecessary travel, and steer clear of electric wires and poles. In case of emergencies, residents are encouraged to contact the PDMA helpline at 1129.
