Monsoon 2024 Brings Widespread Damage and Casualties Across Pakistan

Islamabad: Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has released a detailed report on the impacts of the ongoing monsoon season, highlighting significant casualties, injuries, and infrastructure damage from July 1 to August 5, 2024. The report underscores the heavy toll that monsoon-related incidents have taken across various regions, with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Sindh experiencing particularly severe impacts.

According to National Disaster Management Authority, the monsoon has led to a cumulative total of 143 deaths and 269 injuries nationwide. KP reported the highest number of casualties, with structural collapses due to heavy rains causing most deaths and injuries. The report also detailed extensive damage to housing and infrastructure, with hundreds of homes either partially or fully damaged, and critical disruptions to roads and bridges.

Jacobabad in Sindh witnessed significant damage, with 185 homes affected and several structural collapses. Relief efforts are ongoing, with emergency supplies and services being provided, although the report notes substantial challenges in reaching all affected areas due to damaged infrastructure.

The NDMA has called for increased vigilance and preparedness from disaster management authorities as the monsoon season continues. The agency has also detailed its relief operations, including the deployment of dewatering pumps and the distribution of emergency supplies like tents and ration bags to affected families.
