Kolkata: A Muslim man was killed in Kolkata following an attack by a group identified as Hindutva extremists, amid a disturbing surge in mob violence in West Bengal and other parts of northern and eastern India. This incident adds to a growing list of fatal attacks targeting minorities in the region.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the victim, identified as Azgar Molla from Phulbari, was erroneously accused of theft and fatally beaten near a local police station. His family criticized the lack of timely police intervention that could have prevented his death.
This recent killing is part of a broader pattern of increasing anti-Muslim violence across the region. Since early June, there have been multiple reported cases of lynching involving victims mainly from Muslim communities, as well as other marginalized groups. In states like Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, and Chhattisgarh, similar violent incidents have been linked to right-wing groups, with several cases leading to fatalities. In West Bengal alone, recent weeks have seen over 15 such incidents, resulting in multiple deaths and highlighting the heightened communal tensions.
