Srinagar, February 09, 2023 (PPI-OT):In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, Muttahida Majlis-e-Ulema (MMU) Jammu and Kashmir, an umbrella body of religious and social organizations, has expressed serious concern over the continued house detention of its chief, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq. Mirwaiz Umar Farooq is under house arrest since August 4, 2019, a day before Narendra Modi-led fascist Indian government repealed the special status of IIOJK. The MMU in a statement in Srinagar said such an authoritarian step of the administration to keep the Kashmir’s top religious leader under continued detention amounts to a grave violation of religious and human rights. This also hurts the sentiments and feelings of the people and devotees who visit come from far off areas of the territory with the hope to listen to the Friday sermon of the Mirwaiz at the Jamia Masjid Srinagar, it said.
The MMU members said it is a matter of concern for the people, scholars and intellectuals that the top religious leader of Kashmir is being barred from performing his religious duties and obligations. The MMU urged the authorities to ensure unconditional release of the Mirwaiz ahead of the holy month of Shaban especially Shab-e-Baraat. It said also called for the release of other religious scholars who were arrested under draconian law, Public Safety Act, and remain lodged in different jails.
