Srinagar, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, a prominent leader of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, has vocally condemned the imposition of restrictions by authorities on a significant religious event, labeling it an infringement on people’s religious freedoms. His censure comes in the wake of authorities locking the gates of Jamia Masjid in Srinagar, preventing the customary large congregation from observing Juma-tul-Wida, the last Friday of Ramadan.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq shared his disapproval and concerns through a social media message, where he also voiced his solidarity with the oppressed people of Palestine and called for the swift release of Kashmiri political prisoners. He detailed the distress and sorrow the closure of Jamia Masjid on such an auspicious occasion caused him and the people of the valley, emphasizing the emotional and spiritual significance of the last Friday prayers during Ramadan at the mosque.
In addition to being barred from leading prayers at the mosque, Mirwaiz was placed under house arrest on Juma-tul-Wida, further preventing him from attending or leading the significant religious gathering. An attempt to hold a press conference at his residence regarding the matter was also thwarted by the authorities.
In his video message, Mirwaiz lamented the repeated lockdowns of the central Jamia Masjid and his consistent house arrest on Fridays, criticizing the unpredictable and authoritative measures employed by the authorities. He underscored the central role of patience in Islamic teachings, while also making a poignant appeal for prayers for the people of Palestine and for the health and release of Kashmiri political prisoners and youth detained over the years.
