Islamabad: Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Dr. Musadik Malik, and Federal Minister for Communications, Mr. Aleem Khan, convened a high-level meeting today to discuss a joint initiative for the commercial plantation of fruit trees along Pakistan’s motorways and highways. The ministers outlined plans to introduce a lease-based model for the first three years, encouraging private sector involvement without government financial strain.
The initiative aims to boost revenue, fortify environmental resilience, and help reduce Pakistan’s carbon footprint. Dr. Malik underscored the critical role of inter-ministerial collaboration and assured that his ministry would support the project with technical expertise and assistance in carbon credit generation.
To expedite the initiative, Dr. Malik directed the creation of a strike team within 72 hours. This team will focus on developing a comprehensive implementation roadmap and establishing a framework for carbon credit calculation and emissions tracking.
Chairman National Highway Authority, Mr. Muhammad Shehryar Sultan, and Inspector General National Highways and Motorway Police, Mr. B.A. Nasir, were also present at the meeting. Both officials pledged their full support for the project’s successful execution.
The Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination emphasized its commitment to practical, innovative, and sustainable climate action through strategic partnerships and efficient implementation.
