Minister Leghari Targets Electricity Theft, Calls it ‘Economic Terrorism’


Islamabad, In a determined move to curb electricity theft, Federal Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmed Leghari addressed the Chairmen and Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of Power Distribution Companies (Discos) via video link, labeling electricity theft as “economic terrorism.” This crime against the state not only undermines Pakistan’s economic stability but also burdens honest consumers with increased outages and financial losses. Minister Leghari’s bold statement underscores the government’s commitment to tackling this pervasive issue head-on.



According to Press Information Department, Minister Leghari’s discourse with the Discos leadership emphasized the immediate need for innovative solutions to combat power theft. He urged utility officials to embrace technology and advance consumer services to eradicate this menace effectively. The Minister underscored that any hindrance in the anti-theft campaign would be removed promptly, with strict actions promised against complicit employees and officers.



Additionally, Minister Leghari highlighted the principle of non-interference, asserting that the campaign against electricity theft would proceed on merit, ensuring transparency and fairness in all operations. He announced directives for establishing modern customer service centers and appointing skilled officers to enhance the resolution of complaints, emphasizing a consumer-friendly approach with a strict policy against consumer mistreatment.



Moreover, the Federal Minister has called for Discos to maintain rigorous financial records and comprehensive asset documentation to facilitate the concession/privatization process, aligning with government policies. This holistic approach not only aims to tackle electricity theft but also to improve the overall efficiency and accountability within Pakistan’s power sector.
