Minister Leghari Initiates Reform in Power Generation Companies

Islamabad, In a decisive move to address the operational and financial inefficiencies plaguing the government-owned power generation companies (GENCOS), Federal Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari convened a meeting with officials from the Genco Holding Company Limited (GHCL). The meeting centered on evaluating the current state of maladministration within GENCOS and devising strategies to mitigate financial losses to the taxpayer.

According to Press Information Department, Minister Leghari ordered a thorough review of all GENCOS, demanding a comprehensive report that covers the potential sale or alternative use of their assets. This step is seen as vital for the government to make informed decisions about the future of these institutions, which are currently a significant financial drain on the national treasury. In addition to asset management, the Minister stressed the importance of identifying surplus employees within GENCOS, indicating that resolving this issue is critical for timely decisions regarding their employment status and future within the companies.

Furthermore, Minister Leghari underscored the importance of prioritizing and efficiently managing pending legal cases in courts to prevent further financial losses and secure the operational sustainability of GENCOS. This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to reforming the power sector by improving the efficiency and financial health of its generation companies, ultimately reducing the burden on taxpayers and enhancing the sector’s contribution to the national economy.
