Islamabad: Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan emphasized the vast development potential of Balochistan during a meeting with the Country Director of the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) and her delegation in Islamabad. The discussion centered on enhancing cooperation between Pakistan and UNOPS in trade, infrastructure, and economic growth.
Minister Khan pointed out Balochistan’s untapped opportunities in agriculture, particularly date farming, as well as in fisheries and mineral resources. He mentioned the federal government’s collaboration with the provincial government to improve infrastructure across various sectors to create employment, empower women, and uplift border communities.
“Balochistan holds great promise for trade and development,” the minister stated. “We are committed to unlocking this potential through strategic investments in infrastructure, logistics, and value-chain systems, focusing on regional inclusivity and sustainability.”
He acknowledged UNOPS’ support to Pakistan, notably in solar energy for schools, water quality improvement, emergency flood response, and capacity building for law enforcement.
The UNOPS Country Director appreciated the government’s support and reiterated UNOPS’ commitment to supporting initiatives that promote sustainable trade and inclusive growth. She outlined ongoing and upcoming projects, including infrastructure development in health, plastic waste management, and climate-resilient training facilities for law enforcement.
Minister Khan proposed establishing a dedicated coordination mechanism between the Ministry of Commerce and UNOPS to identify and implement joint priority projects. He stressed the importance of involving women and small enterprises in sectors like textiles, IT, and handicrafts.
The meeting concluded with both parties expressing their determination to advance a shared development agenda, particularly in underserved regions like Balochistan.
“We believe this partnership with UNOPS can play a crucial role in fostering export-led growth and inclusive development, especially in areas that need it the most,” the minister said.
