Islamabad: Federal Minister for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives, Ahsan Iqbal, chaired a crucial meeting to assess the identification of locations for Model Special Economic Zones (SEZs) and the policy framework for the relocation of Chinese industries to Pakistan. The meeting, attended by senior officials and representatives from relevant institutions, including the Board of Investment (BOI), focused on enhancing cooperation with China and expediting the development of SEZs.
According to Press Information Department, the BOI provided a detailed presentation on potential sites and necessary policy measures for these economic zones. Ahsan Iqbal emphasized the urgency of strengthening government-to-government collaboration with China and reiterated Pakistan’s dedication to facilitating Chinese industries by providing land. He outlined that infrastructure development, market access, and zone management would be handled by Chinese companies to ensure efficiency.
The Minister issued directives for the immediate identification of land for SEZs and called for a thorough evaluation of existing facilities. He instructed the preparation of a comprehensive concept note to guide policy formulation for these zones. Ahsan Iqbal highlighted the need for a one-window facility to simplify processes for investors and stressed that delays in providing essential infrastructure would not be tolerated.
He urged proactive engagement with Chinese companies and mandated monthly review meetings to address concerns and expedite progress. Ahsan Iqbal assured participants of the government’s commitment to the security of Chinese nationals in Pakistan, affirming that the strong bond of Pak-China friendship would not be compromised. The meeting concluded with a call to fast-track action plans, reinforcing the government’s vision of using SEZs as drivers of economic growth and industrial development.
