Message from Dr Arif Alvi President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan on the occasion of International Day for Parliamentarism on 30th June 2022

Islamabad, June 29, 2022 (PPI-OT):The international day for Parliamentarism is an important occasion to recognize the central role of legislatures in giving people a voice, representation and influence to shape public policy. Parliaments, the world over, have special obligations to advance and promote sustainable growth and fundamental rights.

The Parliament of Pakistan is also playing its role to enhance inclusivity and build a more equal, resilient future for the people of Pakistan. It renders support by legislating on critical issues facing the great nation of Pakistan.

The Parliament of Pakistan is a fundamental pillar of the State and the ultimate forum for the redressal of grievances. We believe in principles of democracy, freedom, equality, tolerance, and social justice, as enunciated by Islam. The rights of minorities to freely profess and practice their religion are also guaranteed under the Constitution.

On this international day, I urge the Parliament to seize every opportunity to reshape and secure the nation’s common future, sustainable growth and welfare of all segments of the society at the core of its work. Parliament should focus on mitigating the miseries of the common man. It should make concerted efforts to legislate on the issues of women, children and persons with disabilities. I reiterate the resolve of the people of Pakistan to a strong and empowered parliamentary system having true representation of the masses at large.
