Srinagar, 12 Oct 2023:IIOJK is grappling with significant environmental consequences as glaciers have diminished by 25% in the past six decades, with a bleak forecast of 48% more potentially disappearing by century’s end, even with moderate climate intervention, as per Shakeel Ahmad Romshoo, an earth scientist and glaciology expert, in a press release by the Kashmir Media Service. The gradual melting and possible future loss of glaciers in the territory threatens to disrupt the water availability, thereby adversely affecting livelihoods dependent on water. The environmental changes, which also pose risks to the region’s agriculture and biodiversity, have notably reshaped the physical and ecological landscape, prompting urgent calls for storage projects and measures to safeguard vital water sources during critical periods.
