Mehbooba Mufti Stands Firm on Special Status for Jammu and Kashmir, Rejects Indian Supreme Court’s Verdict as Final

Karachi, Peoples Democratic Party President Mehbooba Mufti, in a determined statement on Sunday, reiterated her party’s commitment to reinstating the special status of occupied Jammu and Kashmir. This statement comes in the wake of the Indian Supreme Court’s recent decision regarding Article 370, which Mufti staunchly opposes, refusing to accept it as the conclusive judgment on the matter.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Mufti’s remarks were made following the Supreme Court’s December 11 decision that upheld the Modi regime’s controversial move to abrogate Article 370. This article had previously granted special status to occupied Jammu and Kashmir. Mufti emphatically stated that the Supreme Court’s decision is not the ultimate authority, akin to “God’s verdict,” on the issue. She underscored that the battle for Jammu and Kashmir’s special status was far from over.

In her response to the verdict, Mufti conveyed a message of resilience and determination: “We don’t have to lose heart. We will continue our struggle. The Supreme Court is not God.” She highlighted a previous stance of the Supreme Court, which had ruled that Article 370 could not be amended without the recommendation of the constituent assembly. Mufti’s criticism of the recent ruling reflects a deep-seated disagreement with the court’s change in position.

Mufti further addressed the opposition faced by those advocating for Jammu and Kashmir’s special status. She emphasized the unwavering resolve of her party and supporters, stating, “Our opponents want us to give up the fight, but we will continue till our last breath.” Acknowledging the sacrifices made in this long-standing struggle, she vowed not to let these efforts be in vain.

The ongoing conflict over Article 370 and the special status of Jammu and Kashmir remains a contentious issue, with Mufti’s recent statements underscoring the persistent divide and the continued struggle for the region’s autonomy.
