Mehbooba Mufti Slams Indian Government Over Deportation and Property Seizures

Srinagar: Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti has issued a sharp critique of the Indian government, condemning its recent deportation orders and the confiscation of properties.

In a media interview covered by Kashmir Media Service, Mehbooba Mufti expressed concern over the arrests of thousands and the expulsion of individuals who have resided in the region for decades. “Many people who have lived here for 30 or 40 years are being told to leave. They married here and raised children. Now they are being declared Pakistanis? This is cruel and deeply unjust,” she stated.

Mehbooba warned that the demolition of homes and property seizures could alienate the local population. She emphasized the plight of vulnerable groups, including widows and the impoverished, who are now facing eviction. “You’re destroying their lives. Is this how a nation treats its own?” she questioned.

Addressing the recent killing of tourists in Pahalgam, Mehbooba noted the peaceful protests by locals, interpreting them as a rejection of violence. She remarked that the blame often unjustly falls on Kashmiris, citing examples from the past such as the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits and the recent tourist deaths.

Mehbooba reflected on historical incidents like Kargil and the 26/11 attacks, underscoring the importance of dialogue. She urged for understanding amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan, warning against actions that could escalate conflict.

In a closing appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Mehbooba urged the government to view Kashmiris as humans rather than threats. “This is the time to open hearts, not doors to confrontation,” she concluded.
