Srinagar, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti has sharply criticized the Indian government for what she deems as the harassment of families of Hurriyat leaders and activists in Kashmir, describing these actions as human rights violations.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Mufti asserted in a statement issued in Srinagar that the families are being unjustly pursued because of the political views and activities of the Hurriyat members. She alluded to the intimidation tactics reportedly being used to coerce family members of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) leadership into publicly renouncing the Hurriyat’s ideology.
This statement from Mufti comes against a backdrop of heightened tensions in the region, with increased scrutiny on the treatment of political dissidents and their relatives. Her condemnation adds to the narrative of a strained relationship between Kashmiri representatives and the Indian government and underscores concerns about the suppression of political expression and the erosion of civil liberties in Indian-administered Kashmir.
