MBBS Interns in Baramulla Protest for Higher Stipends and Improved Conditions

Srinagar: MBBS interns at Government Medical College (GMC), Baramulla, in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, organized a protest against the local authorities’ policies, particularly focusing on demands for an increase in their stipends.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the interns gathered within the GMC premises, wielding placards and chanting slogans that supported their cause. They expressed frustration over the lack of progress in addressing their demands, despite previous assurances from the authorities.

Adil, one of the internees at GMC Baramulla, highlighted the inadequacy of their current stipend of Rs 12,000 per month, which he claimed is less than what an unskilled laborer earns. “Considering the nature of our work and rising living costs, the amount is extremely insufficient and needs an immediate hike,” he stated.

Despite promises over the past two years to address their stipend concerns, Adil noted that there has been no significant development. Another intern voiced concerns about the finance department questioning their duties in rural areas, despite these forming a crucial part of their yearly activities and being essential for rural healthcare.
