Karachi: Mayor Karachi, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, inaugurated the Karachi Corner at the Karachi Press Club library, highlighting it as a significant initiative for the preservation of the city’s culture and knowledge. During the event, he announced a grant of ten million rupees for the Karachi Press Club and proposed the establishment of similar libraries across Karachi. The Mayor also discussed plans for a garden and a rokeri as personal tributes to his parents.
According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, the Mayor expressed the intention of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) to collaborate with the journalist community for the city’s development. The Karachi Corner is envisioned as a resource for researchers and a means to conserve the cultural and literary heritage of the city. Present at the inauguration were key officials, including the President of the Press Club, Saeed Sarbazi, Secretary Shoaib Ahmed, and Library Secretary Abdul Razzak Abro.
The Mayor announced the introduction of the Karachi Medal to honor writers, poets, and citizens who have made noteworthy contributions, particularly in academic research on Karachi. He reflected on the historical significance of the Karachi Press Club and its role in advocating for democracy and the rights of the oppressed.
Mayor Wahab also mentioned ongoing renovations at Denso Hall and Khaliq Dina Hall libraries, with plans to launch digital libraries soon. KMC is committed to assisting in the enhancement of private libraries as well. Addressing the city’s growing population, he pointed out the need for additional resources and affirmed KMC’s continued support for the Karachi Press Club and journalistic organizations.
In response to questions, the Mayor reported substantial progress in municipal tax collection and addressed infrastructure issues caused by previous administrations. He detailed ongoing road construction projects, including the Malir Expressway and Korangi Causeway, initiated under the Pakistan People’s Party government.
Discussions on the 26th constitutional amendment with the Prime Minister were also mentioned, with a focus on addressing Karachi’s needs and fostering visible improvements under Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s leadership.
