Karachi: Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab announced the commencement of eleven development projects worth one billion rupees for District East, addressing long-standing issues like water leakage and sewerage line repairs. These projects are part of a broader initiative to improve the district’s infrastructure, with work set to begin in the coming days.
Funds have been allocated for Karachi’s 246 Union Councils, with each receiving 20 million rupees. Mayor Wahab emphasized that these funds are distributed without political bias, as every council represents the city. Highlighting the Pakistan Peoples Party’s commitment to fulfilling its promises, he mentioned the ongoing stormwater drain cleaning campaign, set to continue through the monsoon season.
Speaking at a foundation stone-laying event for development projects in Lines Area, Mayor Wahab outlined plans for internal road restoration and street paving. Accompanied by Deputy Mayor Karachi Salman Abdullah Murad and other officials, he assured that the newly approved schemes would commence within a week and be completed within the year. The projects include the carpeting of 200,000 square feet of internal roads.
Recalling his tenure as administrator in 2022, Mayor Wahab revealed his refusal of a 10 million rupee offer to reverse a ban on plastic bags, emphasizing the environmental benefits for Karachi’s population. He urged residents to support the initiative by refusing plastic bags from shopkeepers.
Mayor Wahab also addressed concerns about encroachments and land grabbing, criticizing divisive political tactics that hinder development. He called for unity and accountability in addressing Karachi’s pressing issues, advocating for repairs to roads affected by unauthorized cutting and voicing opposition to taxes on solar panels.
In a plea to the Prime Minister, Mayor Wahab requested greater support for Karachi, expressing his intent to discuss export development funds to further aid the city’s progress.
